The centerpiece of the rock opera “Jesus Christ Superstar” by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice is “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” sung by the character of Mary Magdalene. Her lament has echoed through the ages from the time of Jesus to the present, regardless of whether Jesus has been viewed as divine or as an extraordinary human being inspired by deity. Indeed, not knowing how to love Jesus has been the common bond between people who have shunned or even persecuted one another in the certain knowledge that only they know how to love him. On Sunday April 2 we’ll explore these different perspectives and what relevance they may have to our faith community in the 21st century.
