Rev. James Reeb Memorial Mural
Honoring Rev. James Reeb With a Memorial Mural in Casper
We are thrilled to announce the completion of the Reverend James Reeb Memorial Mural in downtown Casper, Wyoming! This remarkable work of art, created by artist Tony Elmore, pays tribute to a local hero whose life and legacy continue to inspire us all. The mural’s inscription reads: “This mural was created to inspire empathy as the greatest human power, sparked by the legacy of our hometown everyday hero, Rev. James Reeb (1927–1965).”
The mural serves as both a celebration of Reverend Reeb’s contributions to the Civil Rights Movement and a powerful reminder of the enduring impact of compassion and courage. Featuring poignant imagery and historical figures, the mural tells a profound story:
- Rev. James Reeb: A Unitarian Universalist minister and Casper native, Rev. Reeb heeded Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call in 1965 for clergy to join the fight for voting rights in Selma, Alabama. Tragically, he was murdered by segregationists in March 1965 after participating in the march. The mural depicts scenes from his life, highlighting his unwavering commitment to justice and service.
- Rev. Orloff Miller and Rev. Clark Olsen: These fellow Unitarian Universalist ministers accompanied Rev. Reeb on the night of the attack, standing in solidarity with him in Selma.
- Annie Lee Cooper: A courageous civil rights activist who was jailed in January 1965 after standing up to Sheriff Jim Clark while attempting to register to vote.
- Jimmie Lee Jackson: An African American activist whose death on February 26, 1965, after being shot by an Alabama State Trooper, was a catalyst for the Selma to Montgomery marches.
- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: A leader whose vision and dedication to equality continue to guide and inspire movements for justice.
Remembering Rev. Reeb and His Legacy
James Reeb’s story began in Casper, where he attended Natrona County High School and Casper College before serving as a Presbyterian minister. His journey eventually led him to Unitarian Universalism and a life of activism in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood, where he worked tirelessly for fair housing and to support those living in poverty. Despite his national significance, many in Wyoming are unaware of this vital connection to America’s Civil Rights Movement.
The James Reeb Memorial Mural bridges this gap, bringing his story to life as public art accessible to all. Beyond the mural, the project includes a website and public events to foster a deeper understanding of Rev. Reeb’s legacy.
Events and Celebrations
The mural’s public unveiling on August 28, 2019, was a moving tribute. It included a reception and storytelling event titled “Civil Rights Then & Now” at the Lyric in downtown Casper. Panelists included Leah Reeb, NPR “White Lies” co-hosts Chip Brantley and Andrew Beck Grace, and Wyoming author Ammon Medina.
Rev. Reeb was also honored at Casper’s International Day of Peace Celebration on September 21, 2019, reflecting his lifelong dedication to compassion and action.
