UU civil rights activist Viola Liuzzo answered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call to Selma to march for voting rights, and was killed by KKK members on March 25, 1965. What does her story teach us about racism and sexism in America? We will continue collecting food donations for Food For Thought throughout the month, and also be collecting tootbrushes and travel size toothpaste for the January 24th Project Homeless Connect event. Join us in in learning about and celebrating the work of Seton House, our quarterly Care N Share program non-profit. Our UU Casper membership committee will co-lead this service along with guest Deanna Frey, executive director of Seton House. Seton House supports single-parent families in their journey to independence. It’s all about empowerment! “The move a family makes into their new apartment is the first step on the journey to a new life. This is a “Share the Plate” Sunday, where un-designated cash collected during the offering will be donated by UU Casper to Seton House, and participants are also welcome to make donations directly to Seton House by check. Also, through March we will be collecting donations of new or gently used household items to donate to Seton House. Some suggested items include cereal, cleaning products, mops, towels, twin-size sheets, and kitchenware and utensils.
The Rev. James Reeb was killed on March 11, 1965, during the voting rights protests in Selma Alabama. Leah Reeb, granddaughter of Rev. James Reeb, will be our guest speaker for this very special service, sharing his history, shedding light on why he was so driven and what kept him involved, and offering her insights into what her grandfather would be doing and how he would reflect on what is happening in today’s world. Childcare and youth programming are available. Everyone is welcome!
